How do I use Office 365?

 

What is Office 365? How is it different from Microsoft Office?


"Office 365" refers to a new service which joins Office suite applications with the online web apps of Office Online, as well as Skype for Business web conferencing, Exchange Online e-mail and cloud storage with OneDrive. With a new Office 365 account, you can use Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Mail through your web browser. You will also get access to download and install the latest full versions of the Office suite for your personal computer. All current OU users currently have Office Online access through Office 365.

Office Online Mail for 365 - Migration of local Exchange accounts to Office 365 is now complete. Faculty, staff and students are now able to access email at https://office.com.

Is my mail account changing?


As part of the Office 365 roll out, your OU mail account will be upgraded to a new Office 365 mail account. This is presently scheduled to happen during latter months of 2015. You will receive an e-mail alert from OU IT when this process is scheduled to occur for your account. Our OU IT migration team will schedule email migrations by department and will provide support before, during, and after migration to ensure our customers are up and running as they should be. Please watch for additional communications about migration dates and support resources for your area.

Your mail account will still retain all the same messages and folders under this new system. This process will simply require an update to your mail account information, as the settings to access your mail will be different on your computer or device. The process of removing your previous mail account should take anywhere from 5-20 minutes. The process of adding your new 365 account should take anywhere from 5 minutes to several hours, as it will require your computer to download a new copy of all your mail again. Because of this, you may not have immediate access to all your mail while it downloads.

Will I lose my e-mail when it gets upgraded?

All your mail should remain during this upgrade. Most mail clients and apps should keep a copy of your mail messages locally as well as on the mail server. So removing your mail account and adding it with the new settings should not cause one to lose any mail. One will just need to ensure they are not downloading all their mail off the server when new mail comes in. One should be able to verify this by logging in to their new mail account at https://office.com and verifying the folders and e-mail messages match the mail they have in their client like Outlook.

 

Will Office 365 work with my copy of Office?


Office 365 works best with the latest version of Office for Mac and Windows. Office 365 works with slightly limited functionality with Office 2007 and 2010, and with almost complete functionality on Office 2011 and 2013. If you have an earlier edition of Office on your laptop or desktop computer, it is recommended you update to a newer version of Office to use Office 365. How do I add my Office 365 Mail account to my Phone?


Office 365 mail accounts can be set up on your phone, tablet or computer. If you have an existing OU mail account on these devices, it will need to be removed. Once removed, you can then add your new 365 account. Once your OU mail has been migrated to Office 365, please see the following pages for instructions to remove your old OU mail account (if present) and add your new Office 365 mail account:

How do I setup my Office 365 Account on my Computer or Device?


Office 365 mail accounts can be set up on your phone, tablet or computer. If you have an existing OU mail account on these devices, it will need to be removed. Once removed, you can then add your new 365 account. Note that the removal and new account addition process make take several hours depending upon the speed of your connection and amount of mail in your OU mail account.

Is Internet access required for Office 365?


Internet access is required to install and activate your Office 365 desktop suite. Internet connectivity is also required to access Office 365 cloud services, including Office Online, Exchange email and Skype for Business. Your Office 365 will be maintained as long as you are affiliated with OU and have an OU e-mail account.

 

What is the cloud?


“The cloud" is a friendly way of describing web-based computing services that are hosted on the Internet. By storing your data online, you are able to access your Office 365 cloud saved files and folders from any computer with internet access.
