File Requests - Accept Files from Dropbox and non-Dropbox Users

File requests allows one to collect and receive files—big or small — from anyone, right into your Dropbox. File requests are ideal for receiving a large file or collection of files, collecting photos after a special event, and requesting submissions from coworkers and clients.

To use File Requests, just choose a folder to collect files into, and send a request out to as many people as you like. They can then upload files — as big as 10 GB each — even if they don’t have a Dropbox account.

Dropbox has also built admin controls for file requests. If you’re an admin, you can choose whether or not your team can create file requests, and also view member-specific activity for sending and responding to file requests.

To use File requests, visit dropbox.com/requests. If you’d like to learn more about how file requests work, you can visit Dropbox's Help Center.

Information for Dropbox for Business Admins on managing their File Requests can be found here.

How to create a File request

  1. Sign in to the Dropbox website.
  2. Open File requests.
  3. Click Create a new file request.
  4. Under What are you requesting?, enter a name for the folder that will store all collected files.
    • Note: This new folder is where files uploaded to your file request are stored in your Dropbox. By default the uploaded files are private; however, you can share the uploaded files by selecting a shared folder or by sending a link to the files.
  5. Under Where should these files go in your Dropbox?, you'll see the path to the new folder populate. If you'd like to change the folder's location, click Change folder.
  6. Click the Next button.
  7. On the Send file request screen you can copy the file request link and include it in an email by clicking the Copy link button. Or you can enter emails of the people you need files from, and Dropbox will send an invitation to upload files to the file request for you.
    • Note: Dropbox will also email you whenever people upload files to your file request.
  8. Click Done to send the email invitations and to return to the File requests screen.

How do I invite people to upload files to my file request?

To add people to a file request, hover over the file request and click Add people.

How do I close a file request?

Close a file request when you'd like to stop receiving files. Once a file request is closed, people with an invitation link will no longer be able to upload files to your Dropbox.

  1. Sign in to the Dropbox website.
  2. Open File requests.
  3. Hover over the file request you want to close and click Edit.
